With the combination of the economy being in a constant state of flux and the current push to go organic for health benefits, many people are looking for ways to cut expenses and eat healthier.  Surprisingly, there is an easy way to do this and that is by building a chicken coop.  While it may sound odd at first, let’s take a brief look at the benefits of chicken coop building.

Benefits of Building A Chicken Coop

  • Provides you and your family with daily fresh organic eggs
  • Recycles your family’s food scraps
  • Produces high quality fertilizer for your garden that ensures top quality, organic plants and vegetables

So as you can see, by building your own backyard chicken coop, you are essentially creating a natural cycle for your own personal ecosystem by having a place to dispose of scraps which produces food to feed your family (eggs) and fertilizer to grow more food which you can feed to the chickens, which feeds your family…etc.  You get the picture!

Is Building Your Own Chicken Coop Hard?

Not at all.  While doing research into why you should build your own chicken coop, I found detractors stating that working out the dimensions, buying the materials, providing proper insulation, ventilation and lighting, positioning the nests and perches, waste collection and protection from the elements was all too hard.  But what I actually found is that it is far cheaper and easier to learn how to build your own chicken coop and then do so with just one simple instructional guide.

Building a Chicken Coop – Video

Today I made a big learning process. Do you guys want to know why? Well because I created my first video and I have to tell you that I am really proud of it. Yesterday I thought I need a video for my website so I started to collect a few informations about how to create a video. The topic for my video is building a chicken coop but that is nothing unexpected I guess.

I started to play around with a few programs and finally a few hours later it was done. I uploaded it to youtube and now I want to present it to you. Leave a comment and let me know what you think about the video.

The video explains on how to build a chicken coop. I used a podcast from the famous Bill Kenne who wrote the book with the title “Building a Chicken Coop”. So it is not my voice in the video. You can watch the video here:

How to build a chicken coop

Build a chicken coop

build a chicken coopFirst of all it is important to survey the area where the chicken coop will be. Also one of the first things is to decide if the backyard chicken coop should be portable, semi-permanent or fixed. These two things are the first things we have to do every time before we start building a chicken coop.

Why this is so important? Well imagine you want to build the best chicken coop ever and after all the hard work is done the coop is on the wrong place and you want it about 6-8meters to your left. If you made a fixed coop you will have a problem by now.

The backyard chicken coop is where the chickens will eat and sleep. They also lay their eggs there so it is important to provide them with the best available comfort. It is also advisable that you keep your chickens safe from potential predators. Such a coop will be the best thing to protect them.

If you don´t have the time to build your own chicken coop you can go and buy a pre-made one but please believe me when I say that there is nothing better than to see how your chickens like the selfmade home you made for them. A pre-made chicken coop is expensive and you can build your own within a few hours.

Chicken coops plans

chicken coops plans

1. Choose the right design and plan:
It is advisable that you choose the right design before your start to work on your coop. There are hundreds of chicken coops plans on the WWW! Make sure that you choose the right one for you.

2. Position of the coop:
When you decide to build a semi-permanent or a fixed chicken coop please make sure that you use the right place for it. The area should have the right amount of sunlight and the area should not be directly in the direction of the wind.

3. Others:
To make the building phase a lot easier you have to consider the following two things:

  • a. Start to build the next boxes at the same time you build the chicken coop. This will save you a lot of time.
  • b. Plan on four heads of chicken per feeder and waterer

Buying construction materials

As soon as you decided which chicken coop you want to build (I guess you already choose a plan from the hundreds of different chicken coop plans) you can go and buy the construction materials. If you want to save some money you can go and get your building supplies from second hand shops. Believe me that sometimes you will find really good material there. If you don´t want to save money than just go and buy everything where you prefer to buy. I have another tip for you:

  • Double (or even triple) the size of your current chicken coop you want to build. Why? Believe me when I say that you will have more chickens within the next 2-3 years. If you build a bigger chicken coop at the beginning you will have less work in the next years.

This is up to you. It is just a tip from me because I had to re-build everything 2 years later. Anyway let´s continue. Let´s say you forgot nothing than you are ready to start right now.

Ready, Set, Build a chicken coop

It is not very difficult to build a chicken coop. Once you have your materials and your plan you can start with the work. Be sure that you follow every step on your plan! If you make something wrong fix it as soon as possible. When it is too late you will have a problem. Be sure that you clean all the pieces of wood, cut them to the right size based on the dimensions on your chicken coop plan and don´t start with the windows and doors. This should be the last ones you care about.

When you are done I would love it if you can send me a picture from your chicken coop.  Last but not least I will show you a picture of my chicken coop I am planning to build right now. What do you think about it?:
